Android NDK r30: a Clang update, LTO and miscompilation fixes, and API 37
NDK r30 updated Clang and fixed LTO and miscompilation bugs, so native protection pipelines built on LLVM need a fresh baseline.
What happened on this date
At 2026-09-08T19:19Z (UTC), the android/ndk repository published NDK r30. The notes say LLVM was updated to clang-r574158c and list compiler fixes including a runtime segfault with LTO and nested exception handlers (Issue 2073), a compiler hang with -O3 on ARM (Issue 2215), a miscompilation involving references and pointers (Issue 2225), a crash compiling a defaulted equality operator for AArch64 (Issue 2226), and LLDB failing to read a shared library that is the last entry in the APK (Issue 2234). The sysroot's maximum API level rose to 37, ARM dot-product code generation improved, and simpleperf prebuilts work on Android 10. Upstream LLVM also published 23.1.1 the same day at 10:58Z; the NDK ships Android's own Clang build, and this entry does not treat the two as the same version.
Why it matters for protecting app logic
Teams that place core logic in native libraries often also use LLVM-based obfuscation plugins, LTO and high optimization levels. An NDK compiler update touches all three: plugins are usually tied to a specific Clang version, and fixes for segfaults under LTO with exception handling and for miscompilations show that the same source can produce different machine code under old and new toolchains. That does not mean old builds are broken, but earlier verification that the protected build behaves correctly cannot simply be carried forward. The notes say nothing about obfuscation plugins, so compatibility must be confirmed with the plugin provider rather than assumed.
Checks you can run
First, do not upgrade the NDK and an obfuscation plugin in the same change; upgrade the NDK alone and compare results. Second, check the plugin provider's documentation for the Clang revisions it supports. Third, on builds with LTO and release optimization levels, run the full test suite on real arm64 devices, with emphasis on exception-handling paths. Fourth, after upgrading, check exported symbols, strip status and size of each .so to confirm nothing is unexpectedly exposed. Fifth, when targeting API 37, validate on Android 17 devices as well. Record the NDK and Clang revisions used for every release build.
Your checklist
- Upgrade the NDK and obfuscation plugins separately and compare
- Test LTO release builds on real devices, covering exception paths
- Check .so exported symbols and strip status after upgrading
